About Us
"The Velvetones is the brainchild of Stephens music director Pamela Ellsworth-Smith. “I just thought it would be a wonderful outlet for the students,” Ellsworth-Smith says. “There’s such an education in studying vocal jazz.”
"That education goes well beyond simply learning to sing jazz songs. Musically, the Velvetones’ practice and training includes singing a cappella (without instrumental accompaniment) while blending their voices to act as a single presentation."
"By accomplishing this, Ellsworth-Smith says the women improve their musicianship and their hearing. The style also teaches them how to work together as an ensemble, being independent while being interdependent."
